Most of the finished space is allocated to the main level, with a master suite that identifies it as having been designed particularly for the retiring boomer generation. That also distinguishes it from all too many 2-story plans in which wasted and costly space is distributed haphazardly across unnecessarily large upstairs bedrooms which home buyers are obliged to pay for.
In short, this is a better-balanced design than most, because Holitzner's planner is a master craftsman who understands "harmony in the home".
Despite the fact that this is the smallest, and therefore the lowest-priced home in Hidden Lake Estates, its designer has not stinted on his imagination and care to design a beautiful home that anyone would be proud to live in.
The design advantageously uses the 70ft wide lot to enhance the three gables in the front elevation by accentuating them sharply against a steeply pitched roofline behind. The gable ends disclose a second bedroom above the 2-car garage, the 2-level high vestibule and loft above the main entrance, and a smaller gable end comprising a traditional covered entry porch at the other side of the house.
The effect of the front elevation design is to focus the eye on a 2-level stone wall that is the key exterior feature at the centre of The Almonte, which is otherwise clad in a brick facade.
Another advantage of the steeply pitched roof is that it provides a dramatic sloped ceiling to the double storey 16' x 18'6 Great Room overlooking the rear yard. Adjacent to the Great Room on one side is a breakfast room leading into a partly-open but otherwise traditional kitchen. It, in turn, leads handily into a separate dining room beside it that faces the front of the house. An ample hallway also leads into a separate luxury master suite on the other side of a central staircase. It offers an optional sloped ceiling.
The upstairs landing provides a loft that can be used as a computer nook against a railing through which the Great Room can be viewed dramatically from above. Bedrooms 2 & 3 are situated off of the loft as wings on either side.
Hidden Lake Estates is situated in a secluded enclave of single family homes on fully-serviced 70ft wide lots in the village of Carp, which is approximately ten minutes drive from Kanata and Stittsville, and surrounded by rural expanse and rolling hills.
Holitzner's designer is one of about four or five outstanding Ottawa home designers who possess an uncommon sensitivity to both the inside and the exterior of a home, and clearly take considerable pride in their skills.
